Cubs
Appropriate Athlete Development: FUNdamentals
Average Age: 8–12
Roster Group: Pre-Competitive
Season Format: Three sessions per season
The Cubs group is the last step in the Whitehorse Glacier Bears' pre-competitive pathway and is designed for young swimmers who are developing fundamental aquatic skills in a fun, encouraging, and structured environment. This roster emphasizes technical development across all four strokes, basic race skills, and foundational training habits.
Swimmers in Cubs build strength, coordination, and confidence while learning legal technique for freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. Practices focus on streamlining, kicking, diving, turns, and aerobic endurance, preparing athletes for future success in competitive swimming.
The program also introduces key concepts such as pacing, stroke count, race rules, and the use of the pace clock. While Cubs is pre-competitive, swimmers will begin to participate in club time trials and local development meets as appropriate, fostering familiarity with racing and goal setting.
Cubs is offered in three sessions throughout the season, and athletes may register for one or multiple sessions depending on readiness and interest.
The Cubs group serves as the essential foundation for athletes progressing into the Junior Competitive Roster Group, where more advanced training and racing begin.
